- In Serbia, since early 2018, the latest non-invasive medical glue method of treating varicose veins has been available, which has shown excellent results both in terms of problem resolution and post-operative period. This method was first used in 2011 in Germany and later spread to throughout Western Europe and the United States. It was the project of a small group of doctors, primarily those interested in the treatment of venous diseases. Later, several scientific studies were done that tested the efficacy of this procedure and as a result, the drug was also approved by the US Drug and Food Agency in 2015. In this part of Europe, the method of treating varicose veins with medical glue for veins is used in Serbia, Hungary and Slovenia - explained doctor Jocić.

As far as phases of varicose veins are concerned, in the first phase patients usually have problems in the form of occasional pain in the legs, cramps, but without visible veins or so-called ‘capillaries’. In this phase, the wrong direction of venous blood flow cannot be diagnosed by ultrasound examination. Instead, the treatment involves possibly taking drugs (venotonics) and wearing elastic compression stockings. However, already in the next stage of the disease, enlarged veins are visible, and in many cases, it is possible to diagnose the wrong course of blood flow by ultrasound examination.
- In the most severe phase of the venous disease, wounds occur, which are increasingly more frequent due to neglect and inadequate treatment of the disease. When the first big wound appears, it heals in the period from one to three months. Every subsequent venous wound heals much slower until a stage occurs when there is no possibility of healing. If this condition is not treated, severe complications and a life-threatening condition may occur - concluded doctor Jocić.

- We must be aware of the fact that more than 50 percent of deaths in the world are caused by heart disease. Currently, we are ranked first in terms of the number of deaths from atherosclerosis, severe diseases of the middle and large muscular arteries, and second in Europe by the number of deaths caused by stroke. It is very important that people understand how jeopardized their health is and that they change their lifestyle as soon as possible - warns doctor Jocic.

The heat released at the tip of the laser transducer (photo thermal effect) induces changes inside and in the walls of the venous blood vessel and the vein shrinks. The ultimate result is the closure of the blood flow through the treated part of the vein.

In our country, the introduction of endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) is still at the beginning, although it has been practiced in world medicine for over a decade.
During this period, this method has proved to be particularly effective (treatment success of 98 percent and more) and unproblematic in terms of complications, which has made this method popular throughout the world.
The heat released at the top of the laser transducer (photo thermal effect) causes changes inside and in the wall of the venous blood vessel, followed by the shrinking (clinging) of the vein. The ultimate result is the closure of blood flow through the treated part of the vein.

- There are several methods of treating varicose veins. Treatment starts with medicaments, preparations with acetyl-salicylic acid and diosmin preparations. Compression bandages (elastic vein stockings) and classic surgical technique (striping) are used in the treatment with additional phlebectomy, or removal of those varicose veins that are seen as nodes on the legs. The problem can be solved by classical sclerotherapy, foam sclerotherapy and endovenous procedures (radio frequency and laser ablation) - says doctor Jocić.
